Of course, you can use vmstat with interval, but for those sysadmin folks who are use to using Top, its still more comfortable using (and seeing) the top output.

Topas is the equivalent of Top for AIX.. it’s better than Top as a matter of fact according to some AIX gurus (and Solaris)

If you persists in using top, You’ll have to build it yourself from the sources at http://www.unixtop.org/ plus probably this fix:

        http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=934590&group_id=72892&atid=536044

Cars are no longer a luxury nowadays (except if you want to own a Ferrari or something). Cars are now a necessity in today’s standard of living. And let’s face it, with the price of brand new cars and the forever raising price of gasoline, not every one can buy a new set of wheels.

Thanks to websites that offer to sell (and buy) second hand, used cars many people can have places to search for and are no longer limited to the restrictions of locations.

I bought my first car (my only car for that matter) from a dealer that posted their inventory online. So, thanks to this second hand used car website, I was able to find myself and buy my very own car.

Thanks also to this website (and the internet) for that matter, and idea popped to mind. Why not make my own used car websites that will not only help people buy quality used car, but also earn a couple of dimes on the side?

The search for Free Car Classified Script

How hard could it be? All you need is a webhosting company running with the servers running a flavor of Linux, PHP, Mysql, and open source classfied script and you’re good to go.

But the problem is, I could find a free car classified script that I can install on my webhosting company. I did a quick “free car classified script” search and a “free car classified script download” and the search result came with script that I need to cash out a couple of dollars… unlucky for me, I have no extra dough to cash out.

Hence, this post. I would like to ask for your help. If you know a flexible, free car classified script out there in internet, could you please drop a comment? I already tired auto_classified and PHP Car Dealer.. (and I bought one before forgot the name, but it doesn’t have what I am looking for.. yeah yeah, modify.. no time)

Thanks in advance to those who will point me in the right site for the car classified script! Chow!

FireFTP is an FTP program that works within the Firefox Web browser. Well, Firefox is not actually a full-pledge program but a Firefox plugin or addon. The best thing about this ftp client is that it’s FREE! (Just like any other open source applications/software).

If you’re not familiar with Firefox, it’s an open source web browser and I suggest you use it right now. Trash that IE and start using Firefox (or Google Chrome – cooler!).

File transfer protocol (FTP) is how we send large files from one computer to another using the Internet — not an e-mail attachment.

Here’s how to install and use FireFTP on Firefox.

First thing’s first… install FireFTP to your firefox Browser… You can download FIREFTP here. Or using Firefox, open up this page and click on the “Add to Firefox” button. Dowload one now.

It will automatically install and you will need to restart Firefox.

After restarting there will be a new object on the Tools menu of Firefox called … what else, FireFTP.

When you click on that, Firefox will open another Tab and the first time you open FireFTP, you’ll need to create an account:

You’ll need to input some information to the Fireftp’s text boxes:

Of course, the important field is the ‘host’, the login and the password field.

You will then have a drop down menu with your newly created profile… simple choose it and click connect and you’re good to go!

When we say or mention the word Web Server, the first thing that comes to our mind is Apache, right? (if you don’t then what are you doing here reading this? )

Apache is the most well known open source web server there is! Open source?? Make that the most wildly used webserver on the internet, period!

It is believed (and i know they made a survey or study about it) that Apache takes 90% of all web servers in the internet. Most web hosting company, and I’ve once worked in one, use Apache.

This post will talk about how to setup Apache for Virtual Hosting

Setting Up A Virtual Host in Apache

create a completely seperate document root, cgi-bin directory, and logfile directory for each host. You can place these beneath the standard Debian prefix of /var/www or you may use a completely different root

root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www

root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.com
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.com/htdocs
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.com/cgi-bin
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.com/logs

root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.net
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.net/htdocs
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.net/logs
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.net/cgi-bin

root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.org
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.org/htdocs
root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.org/logs

root@irony:~# mkdir /home/www/www.example.org/cgi-bin

NEt
Here we’ve setup three different directory trees, one for each site. If you wanted to have identical content it might make sense to only create one, and then use symbolic links instead.

The next thing to do is to enable virtual hosts in your Apache configuration. The simplest way to do this is to create a file called /etc/apache2/conf.d/virtual.conf and include the following content in it:

#
# We're running multiple virtual hosts.
#
Nameserver *

NameVirtualHost *

(When Apache starts up it reads the contents of all files included in /etc/apache2/conf.d, and files you create here won’t get trashed on package upgrades.)

Once we’ve done this we can create the individual host configuration files. The Apache2 setup you’ll find on Debian GNU/Linux includes two directories for locating your site configuration files:

/etc/apache2/sites-available

This contains configuration files for sites which are available but not necessarily enabled.
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled

This directory contains site files which are enabled.

As with the conf.d directory each configuration file in the sites-enabled directory is loaded when the server starts – whilst the files in sites-available are completely ignored.

You are expected to create your host configuration files in /etc/apache2/sites-available, then create a symbolic link to those files in the sites-enabled directory – this will cause them to be actually loaded/read.

Rather than actually messing around with symbolic links the Debian package includes two utility commands a2ensite and a2dissite which will do the necessary work for you as we will demonstrate shortly.

Lets start with a real example. Create /etc/apache2/sites-available/www.example.com with the following contents:

#
# Example.com (/etc/apache2/sites-available/www.example.com)
#
<VirtualHost *>
ServerAdmin webmaster@example.com
ServerName www.example.com
ServerAlias example.com

# Indexes + Directory Root.
DirectoryIndex index.html
DocumentRoot /home/www/www.example.com/htdocs/

# CGI Directory
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/www/www.example.com/cgi-bin/
<Location /cgi-bin>
Options +ExecCGI
</Location>

# Logfiles
ErrorLog /home/www/www.example.com/logs/error.log
CustomLog /home/www/www.example.com/logs/access.log combined

</VirtualHost>

ow we’ve got:

Three directories which can be used to contain our content.

Three directories which can be used to contain our logfiles.

Three directories which can be used to contain our dynamic CGI scripts.

Three configuration files which are being ignored by Apache.

To enable the sites simply run:

root@irony:~# a2ensite www.example.com
Site www.example.com installed; run /etc/init.d/apache2 reload to enable.

root@irony:~# a2ensite www.example.net
Site www.example.net installed; run /etc/init.d/apache2 reload to enable.

root@irony:~# a2ensite www.example.org
Site www.example.org installed; run /etc/init.d/apache2 reload to enable.

This will now create the symbolic links so that /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/www.example.org, etc, now exist and will be read.

Once we’ve finished our setup we can restart, or reload, the webserver as the output above instructed us to do with:

root@irony:~# /etc/init.d/apache2 reload
Reloading web server config...done.
root@irony:~#

From the blog of Sun Microsystems’ CEO, Jonathan Schwartz‘ :

We announced big news today – our preliminary results for our fiscal second quarter, and as importantly, that we’re acquiring MySQL AB.

… we’re putting a billion dollars behind the M in LAMP.

With this ground breaking event, I’m sure there will be some far out development in Mysql/Sun in the near future.

I would like to post an update on our previous OpenLDAP source installation, but I encountered an error so, enough with the source thing and let’s install one from packages which is available on Sunfreeware.

OpenLDAP is an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. These build packages installs in /usr/local/

Requirements and Dependencies

Here’s what packages you’ll need:

openldap-2.3.35

Dependencies are:

openssl-0.9.8e

sasl-2.1.21

libiconv,

db-4.2.52.NC

libgcc_s.so.1 which you can get on libgcc-3.4.6 or gcc-3.4.6

This implementation of OpenLDAP was build on a sparc machine Sun Blade 100 workstation running Solaris 8.

Installing Packages

You can go ahead and refer to this post in using the pkgadd .

Once all the packages are installed above, the binary can be found in /usr/local/bin , /usr/local/sbin and config files are in /usr/local/etc.

There are some more setup and configuration to setup (like setting of variables) but as far as installation is concern, we’re done.

See you on the next post about configuration for OpenLDAP

For the UNIX side of things, we’ll try to feature one command a week that is commonly used in system/user administration on a UNIX box. If anyone wants to contribute more, then we may do one command every two days or ‘Unix Command for the day’. Something like that.

For today, it’s all about getent.

getent is short for Get Entries. The command suppose to get entries from an administrative database. This database can be passwd, group, hosts, ipnodes, services, protocols, ethers, network or netmasks.

For each of these databases, getent uses the appropriate library routines described in getpwnam, getgrnam, gethostbyaddr, gethostbyname, getipnodebyaddr, getipnodebyname, getservbyname, getprotobyname, ethers(3SOCKET), and getnetbyname(3SOCKET), respectively.

getent prints out the database entries that match each of the supplied keys, one per line, int the format of the matching administrive file: Examples, passwd, group, hosts, etc….

Example: To check if a user dpusp or information about the TIT group:

# getent
usage: getent database [ key ... ]
# getent passwd dpusp
dpusp:x:7781:500::/export/home/TIT/dpusp:/bin/sh
#
# getent group TIT
TIT::500:adleo,gfish,rpesc,ftpoper,amkor
#

There.
