There’s a new player in town for the search engine business. Nope, not that ‘Google killer search engine‘ called Cuil (aint that defunct yet?) The new search engine that’s making a buzz in the world wide internet is called Wolfram Alpha.

I first read and heard about this from a collegue who writes on review ninja and most of the info you’ll read about Wolfram alpha search engine here are borrowed from TechCrunch and other Wolfram Alpha wikis.

What is Wolfram Alpha?

Wolfram Alpha is an web service that answers queries directly by computing the answer from structured data. What does that mean? Well, unlike most conventional search engine (Google, Yahoo, MSM, Asks others) where searchers put it the info they want to find out and presented with tons of websites or webpages about that keywords, Wolfram Alpha can answers questions that the searhers asks!

The developer of Wolfram Alpha, Stephen Wolfram, says that the unique search engine is build on what he calls “computational knowledge engine”. What is it? Well, basically it means that you can ask it factual questions and it computes answers for you.

TechCrunch explains it more concise:

It doesn’t simply return documents that (might) contain the answers, like Google does, and it isn’t just a giant database of knowledge, like the Wikipedia. It doesn’t simply parse natural language and then use that to retrieve documents, like Powerset, for example. Instead, Wolfram Alpha actually computes the answers to a wide range of questions — like questions that have factual answers such as “What country is Timbuktu in?” or “How many protons are in a hydrogen atom?” or “What is the average rainfall in Seattle?”

Remember the keyword there… Wolfram Alpha Search Engine answers questions with “Factual Answers“. So, I guess questions like, “What would the political status of Pres. Obama be in 5 years?” or “Who’ll be the next president of the Philippines?”. Meaning Wolfram Alpha does not predict future or gives opinions. The answers it has are FACTS.

How Does It Work

Wolfram Alpha contains formal models of much of what we know about science — massive amounts of data about various physical laws and properties, as well as data about the physical world. Remember all facts. Otherwise the answers will not be 100% true.

Since it ‘computes’ for the answers, it not like wikipedia where all the info are in a static, non-changing page. This means that if you asks a questions that needs to be computed, Wolfram Alpha Search can do it for you. Those are scientific or Mathematical type of questions of course.

What the Future for Wolfram Alpha?

So, where’s Wolfram Alpha heading? No one knows actually, even Wolfram Alpha would know the answers if asked that question *grin*… It really all depends on the acceptance of the internet users on this new technology.

All I can say is that, let’s try it out. If it clicks, it clicks… I am sure Google is doing something that can compete with Stephen Wolfram’s baby. Let’s wait.

Internet is a common thing nowadays. There is internet in everywhere we go and the access to it is also pretty easy to get. With so many website flocking the internet today, parents are alarmed because even a child can access the untamed, wild places of the internet.

Fortunately there is KidZui, an internet browser specifically made for children.

Usually what we parents do (yes folks, your Sysadmin is a dad) is to blacklist all the harmful and inappropriate sites in the net, but as you know, the internet has boom and it is growing like wildfire. And we can’t always filtered out those bad sites (pornographic, violence etc) with the uncontrollable growth of the internet.

What the folks in Kidzui did was, instead of filtering out or blacklisting those sites not suitable for children, they instead whitelisted those that are definitely child-friendly websites.

How did they do it? How did they compile those websites that are educational, entertaining and absolutely for safe for children?

During that time, the company has hired around 200 teachers and parents from across the United States to scour the net for appropriate sites and content. So far they’ve whitelisted about 500,000 websites, as well as many videos found on YouTube. Spiders have helped to gather this content, but ultimately all of it was reviewed manually by humans.

That’s from TechCrunch.

My son has been using Kidzui for a month now, and I must say that the application is impressive… It even has this reporting thing that is being sent to the parent’s email… to know which sites the child is browsing.

Kidzui really is amazing, it has potential.. More power to Kidzui… You are doing children and parents and the whole internet community a great thing.

Everybody seems to be twitting these days. I have a twiter (twitter) account, I am assuming that you too twit. All of my friends are on twiter and most of the people here at work are all twitters.

Micro blogging, as twiter I guess is categorized, has becoming more and more popular. Maybe because it’s faster and more convenient to say what you want to say or share the things you want to people in just a few strokes of the keyboard.

Here’s what I read in Tech Crunch About the amazing growth of twiter user in the United States:

Maybe it is all the TV news mentions, but Twitter is seeing the growth in U.S visitors to its site accelerating. In February, 4 million people in the U.S. visited the site, up from 2.6 million the month before, according to the latest data from comScore. That represents a 55 percent month-over-month growth rate, compared to 33 percent growth in each of the two months prior. (ComScore has yet to release February figures for worldwide visitors, but for January that number is 6 million).

These numbers are only for visitors to Twitter.com, and they do not capture usage on desktop or mobile clients. And the apps just keep on coming. For instance, Twitdom now counts 529 Twitter apps. But the site visitor numbers are indicative of the steep growth ramp Twitter is enjoying right now. It is still early days. Can its growth keep accelerating or is it unsustainable?

Twiter Twitter, Everyone Twits

So, if you still don’t have a twiter account, you’re missing out to the trend buddy. Go fire up your firefox and create a twiter account and socialize to fellow twitters..

FireFTP is an FTP program that works within the Firefox Web browser. Well, Firefox is not actually a full-pledge program but a Firefox plugin or addon. The best thing about this ftp client is that it’s FREE! (Just like any other open source applications/software).

If you’re not familiar with Firefox, it’s an open source web browser and I suggest you use it right now. Trash that IE and start using Firefox (or Google Chrome – cooler!).

File transfer protocol (FTP) is how we send large files from one computer to another using the Internet — not an e-mail attachment.

Here’s how to install and use FireFTP on Firefox.

First thing’s first… install FireFTP to your firefox Browser… You can download FIREFTP here. Or using Firefox, open up this page and click on the “Add to Firefox” button. Dowload one now.

It will automatically install and you will need to restart Firefox.

After restarting there will be a new object on the Tools menu of Firefox called … what else, FireFTP.

When you click on that, Firefox will open another Tab and the first time you open FireFTP, you’ll need to create an account:

You’ll need to input some information to the Fireftp’s text boxes:

Of course, the important field is the ‘host’, the login and the password field.

You will then have a drop down menu with your newly created profile… simple choose it and click connect and you’re good to go!
